Is a Frankenseiko from India Worth It?
Seiko watch from India. Worth it?
Here's how it started: I had a small $25 credit on eBay and didn't know what I was going to purchase. As a novice watch collector, I thought it could go toward once of the less expensive watches I want in my collection, like a Casio G-Shock, Casio MDV-106 (since acquired), or a Timex Weekender. As I shopped, however, I became interested in the shiny "Seiko 5" watches being shipped out of India. As I became more interested, I realized I had the perfect moment to buy one of these watches and see if it had any value.
I will tell you, however, these watches are looked down upon by the general watch collecting community because they are often refurbished with spare, un-matching parts, have repainted dials, and have very little value.
Here's the deal: I paid
$23.99 $0 after my eBay credit. Shipping was free. The watch is an automatic movement, but I can't trust the model number on the case back. The dial has been repainted and there's no service record at all, which is expected.
I received this watch in the mail on October 15, 2018. I was excited to open the box and see the watch. It had just come all the way from India. Shipping was relatively fast. And honestly, it was exactly what I expected. It had a nice, clean repainted dial, a cheap throw-away band, and new acrylic crystal. The band was too cheap to keep, so I threw the watch on a new band and wore it for the next few days.
Here's what I think about this watch today: it is great if you need a practical watch you're not afraid to throw on every day. This is especially true if you're not concerned with style. The watch is reliable and keeps time. But it's never going to be a watch with anything more than sentimental value.
This watch is good if you're not concerned with style. It's never going to be a watch with anything more than sentimental value.
Need a watch with style that comes with more value, look at the Cadisen C3102. Better yet, need a watch with value, look for a used Seiko SNK809 (or any other watch from the Seiko SNK800 series). Read more about other watches with great value under $50.
